Lessons
The purpose of this lesson is for students to understand the difference between whole grains and refined grains. Students will investigate and dissect stalks of wheat with the grains still attached and grind flour with a flour mill. They will also compare the taste and nutritional differences between different types of flours.
The purpose of this lesson is for students to explore the differences between winter and spring gardens and the food they produce. Students will observe the size, shape, color and weight of winter vegetables. Students will plant spring seeds and seedlings for the school garden, and use seed catalogs to plan a spring garden.
The purpose of this lesson is for students to appreciate Earth’s resources and celebrate Earth Day. Students will learn about different ways to recycle, create art from recycled items, and practice using their classroom recycling bin.
The purpose of this lesson is to introduce students to pollination and pollinators. Students will learn about the important role that pollinators play in the garden to make sure our fruits and vegetables grow. They will make models of pollinators and search for pollinators in the garden.
The purpose of this lesson is for students to learn about the different jobs needed to support a farm and bring food to the table. They will discuss what it takes to make the school garden grow and compare this to what it might take to manage a large farm. The lesson supports the DCPS Kindergarten ELA Unit Community Workers.
The purpose of this lesson is to introduce students to soil and to explore its different components. During this lesson, students will examine soil from different areas around the school and dissect soil samples from the garden. Students will also work to prepare the garden for winter by protecting the soil.
